Making The Transition

Helping you make the jump...

The Transisiton team at SHC are here to help students that are particluarly nervous or anxious about starting with us in September.

Our dedicated team help through a number of methods, from having a 1-2-1 induction period, where you get to know the college and staff without the ordinary busyness of daily college life, to being able to regularly check in with the team whenever you are feeling worried or upset.

Jay has been assitisting students to settle in and transition to SHC for many years. He is always available for a chat if you're feeling down or need cheering up.

Having anxiety, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to cope with life at college, but with the help of the transition team I settled in better than I ever could have imagined.

Shooters Hill College - Guided Tour
The first video has been designed to help prospective students understand what it will be like to be a student at Shooters Hill. Autistic learners were involved in the planning of this video and they have highlighted the times during the day that they have felt the highest levels of stress or anxiety. These situations appear within this short video to help students to know what to expect and, consequently, help to reduce their anxiety levels.

Interview with Levent
The second video is of an interview with Levent; he is a student with a diagnosis of ASD who, last academic year, was part of a social skills development group.
Levent, along with peers, made exceptional progress and in this video is recorded talking about his experiences whilst being a student at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College.
We hope this video acts to support new students in the following three ways:

  1. To support transition by watching a student discuss how he had a positive experience at Shooters Hill College.
  2. As reassurance that if in the past they have found making friends difficult it is possible with some support to do so at Shooters Hill College.
  3. As an inspiration that they too could make excellent progress and gain the self-confidence to talk on film to a wider audience, something Levent would have found more difficult in the past.

We recommend that parents talk through with their child how they feel about their transition and any worries they might have, so that we know how best we can help at enrolment.
