Celebrating VE Day: Codebreaking, History and a 1940s Tea Party

During the week of VE Day, our Personal Development students took part in a fun and educational project called ‘Cracking the Code’, based on the Second World War.

Students solved different types of WWII-style codes, learning how important codebreakers were during the war. We also looked at how the war affected our local area, and explored different careers and apprenticeships in the armed forces.

On 8th May, we celebrated the end of the week with a street party-style tea party. There was live 1940s music, people danced the Lambeth Walk, and everyone enjoyed scones and sweet treats.

We were lucky to be joined by special guests who were born during the war. They spoke with our students and shared their experiences. It was a special moment for both the students and the guests, and a great example of how different generations can learn from each other.

At 12:00, the whole college joined in a two-minute silence to remember those who served and sacrificed. Afterwards, we all sang ‘God Save the King’ together.

The week was a great mix of learning, fun and reflection. It reminded us how important peace, unity and community are – not just in the past, but also today.
