The VTCT Skills Level 1 Certificate in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector provides a strong foundation in Hair and Beauty, combining practical experience with industry-relevant knowledge.

You will explore the hair and beauty industry, develop practical salon skills and gain an understanding of professional standards expected within a salon environment. The course is designed to build your confidence, creativity and practical skills, preparing you for progression to further study, apprenticeships or employment within the industry.

  • Shampoo and Conditioning – learn how to prepare clients, shampoo and condition different hair types and select suitable products.
  • Style Hair Using Hairdressing Techniques – develop practical styling skills and techniques used within the industry.
  • Create a Hair and Beauty Image – combine creative and practical skills to produce professional finished looks.

Throughout the course, you will develop your knowledge, practical ability, confidence and professional salon skills.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is designed to reflect real industry practice and allows you to demonstrate both your practical skills and your understanding of the Hair and Beauty sector.

  • Coursework and written activities, including assignments, worksheets and unit-based questions.
  • Practical assessments observed by your assessor.
  • Presentations, demonstrations and professional discussions.
  • A portfolio of evidence, which may include photographs, witness statements, written work and assessment records.

Evidence is collected throughout the course and linked to the requirements of each VTCT unit.
