Overview

The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Beauty Therapy is designed to introduce you to the skills, knowledge and professional standards required within the beauty industry. You will learn how to carry out basic beauty therapy treatments safely and professionally, while developing confidence in a realistic salon environment.

Throughout the course, you will gain practical experience in beauty treatments, client care and salon procedures. You will also develop communication, teamwork and professional skills that will support your progression into further study or employment within the hair and beauty sector.

Units you will study

Your programme may include units such as:

  • Follow Health and Safety in the Salon – learn how to work safely, maintain hygiene standards and follow salon procedures.
  • Providing Basic Manicure and Pedicure Treatments – develop practical skills in providing hand and foot treatments and suitable aftercare advice.
  • Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector – explore career opportunities, job roles and professional expectations within the industry.
  • Themed Face Painting and The Art of Photographic Make-up – develop creative make-up skills for themed events and photographic work.

Other units may include skin care, basic make-up application, nail art, salon reception duties, working with others, creating a hair and beauty image, and presenting a professional image in a salon.

Entry requirements

To join this course, you will need:

  • GCSE grades 1–2, or equivalent qualifications, in relevant subjects such as English and Maths.
  • A strong interest in Beauty Therapy and the hair and beauty industry.
  • A willingness to participate in practical sessions, group work and independent study.
  • A commitment to developing confidence, communication skills and professional salon behaviours.

Assessment is designed to reflect real industry practice and allows you to demonstrate both your practical skills and your knowledge.

  • Coursework and written assignments, including projects, case studies and written tasks.
  • Practical assessments observed by your assessor while carrying out treatments and salon activities.
  • Presentations, demonstrations and professional discussions.
  • A portfolio of evidence that brings together your knowledge, understanding and practical achievements.

Your portfolio will be developed throughout the course and all evidence will be linked to the relevant VTCT unit outcomes and assessment requirements.
