Take your culinary skills to the next level with the Level 2 Diploma in Food Production and Cooking at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College. This intermediate program is designed to prepare students for roles in professional kitchens and beyond, with opportunities to produce elegant dishes for our fine dining City View Restaurant. Gain practical experience in a busy environment, where you’ll prepare and serve meals for up to 40 customers daily. This program also integrates customer service and front-of-house training, equipping you with a well-rounded skillset to thrive in the hospitality industry. 

Course Content

The Level 2 Diploma is recognized as an industry-standard qualification, providing the skills and confidence required for employment or further study. This course offers a comprehensive blend of food preparation and customer service training through units such as: 

• Prepare and Cook Meat and Poultry Dishes 

• Prepare and Cook Fish  Dishes 

• Produce Sauces and Soups 

• Prepare and Cook Rice and Grain Dishes 

• Produce Pastry and Bakery Products 

• Maintain Food Safety and Hygiene Standards in Catering 

• Provide Customer Service in a Hospitality Environment 

A key feature of this program is a one-week work experience placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a real-world setting, facilitated by the college.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Level 2 Diploma in Food Production and Cooking course, you’ll need: 

  • An NVQ Level 1 qualification in Food Preparation and Cooking, or an equivalent qualification 

  • Grade 2 or above in GCSE Maths and English  

  • A passion for cooking and hospitality

The Level 2 Diploma is recognized as an industry-standard qualification, providing the skills and confidence required for employment or further study. This qualification prepares you for a variety of roles in the hospitality and catering industry, such as: 

  • Commis Chef: Working in professional kitchens and assisting with food preparation. 

  • Chef de Partie Trainee: Taking responsibility for specific sections in a kitchen. 

  • Catering Assistant: Supporting kitchen and front-of-house operations. 

  • Restaurant Server: Delivering exceptional customer service in fine dining or casual settings. 

It also provides a strong foundation for future career progression into supervisory or managerial roles.
