The Build Academy

Transforming Lives. Building Futures.

The Build Academy at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College is an employer-led construction training programme in partnership with CITB and Federation of Master Builders the programme is  designed to prepare young people for real careers in the construction industry.

The Academy bridges the gap between education and industry by combining high-quality practical training, employability skills, and meaningful on-site experience. Our aim is to develop confident, skilled, site-ready learners who are prepared for employment, apprenticeships, or further study.

What Is the Build Academy?

The Build Academy is a 12-month, industry-focused pathway for learners interested in construction and related trades. It is designed around real employer expectations and reflects how the construction industry operates.

Learners benefit from:

  • Practical, hands-on  training
  • A strong focus on professional behaviours and work readiness
  • Employer-led masterclasses and site visits
  • Structured work placements with construction employers
  • Clear progression routes into apprenticeships or employment

This ensures learners gain not only practical skills, but also confidence, and credibility with employers.

Employer-Led and Industry Backed

The Build Academy is delivered in partnership with key construction industry organisations, including the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

Employers are actively involved in:

  • Shaping curriculum content
  • Delivering specialist masterclasses
  • Providing work placements and live project experience
  • Supporting progression into employment

This ensures training remains relevant, current, and aligned to labour-market needs.

A Different Way of Learning

Learning at the Build Academy goes beyond the traditional classroom. Alongside practical skills, learners develop the professional behaviours needed to succeed in the workplace, including communication, teamwork, reliability, and problem-solving.

Learners are treated as young professionals and are supported to take responsibility for their development, attendance, and career goals.

Who Is the Build Academy For?

The Build Academy is ideal for learners who:

  • Want a practical, hands-on route into construction
  • Learn best through real-world experience
  • Are motivated to progress into employment or apprenticeships
  • Want direct exposure to employers and industry expectations

Each learner receives tailored support, a £50 weekly allowance, and, where on placement, an employer contribution of up to £100 per week. Placements and experiences are carefully matched to each learner’s skills, interests, and career aspirations.

“The Build Academy is about more than training for a job — it’s about developing confident, work-ready young people who understand professional standards and can progress into sustainable careers. By working directly with employers, we ensure our learners are truly prepared for the realities of the construction industry.”  Academy Director – Sunny Bamra
“Through the Build Academy, we’ve been able to support learners into meaningful placements and identify those ready to progress into apprenticeships or employment. It’s a strong model that works for both learners and employers.”
