Begin your journey into the exciting world of hospitality and catering with our Level 1 Food Preparation, Cooking, Patisserie & Confectionery course.

This programme is designed for students passionate about pursuing a career as a chef in the dynamic hospitality industry. Gain hands-on experience in our professional kitchens, where you’ll prepare and serve dishes for the daily operations of the Bamboo and Rose Cafés. With the opportunity to produce up to 300 meals daily in a fast-paced environment, this course provides invaluable real-world experience.

What you'll learn

You will develop the practical skills, knowledge and confidence needed to begin a career in hospitality and catering. Working in professional kitchen environments, you will learn how to prepare, cook and present a range of dishes while following industry standards for food safety and hygiene.

You will also learn how to work effectively as part of a hospitality team, preparing food for real customers and gaining valuable experience of a busy catering environment.

Entry requirements

There are no formal qualifications required to enrol on this course, although a keen interest in hospitality and catering is essential. Completion of the week-long taster programme is also desirable.

How you’ll be assessed

Students are assessed mainly through practical assessments and observations, allowing them to demonstrate their skills in realistic working environments.

There is also a small amount of internally assessed theory, including written assignments and short-answer tasks, which supports and develops practical knowledge.

There are no final exams. Your progress is assessed throughout the year.

Where this course can take you

Successful completion of the course can lead to progression onto Level 2 Hospitality or Catering, subject to meeting SHC attendance and progression guidelines.

As you continue through higher-level qualifications, you can specialise further and prepare for employment, apprenticeships or higher education. Career opportunities can include roles in professional kitchens, restaurants, hotels, bars, cafés, events and hospitality management.
