Course Information

COURSE OVERVIEW

In this dynamic and engaging course, students will explore the art of cinema from both a creative and analytical perspective. The syllabus covers a wide range of films from different genres, time periods, and cultures, encouraging students to develop a deep understanding of film as a medium of storytelling, artistic expression, and cultural commentary.

American and British Film: Students will critically analyze films from the mainstream and independent sectors, studying how narrative, genre, and ideology shape cinema.

Global Cinema: Exploring films from outside the English-speaking world, students will broaden their understanding of international film movements and diverse filmmaking techniques.

Documentary: Investigating the ways real-life events and social issues are portrayed in film, fostering critical discussions about truth, representation, and ethics in documentary filmmaking.

Silent Cinema and Experimental Film: Students will study early cinematic history and innovative approaches to visual storytelling, learning how the evolution of film language continues to influence modern cinema.

Filmmaking Skills: Alongside theoretical study, students will also have the opportunity to create their own short films, applying cinematography, editing, and sound design techniques to bring their creative visions to life.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

5 GCSE's Grade 4-9, including a Grade 5 in English Language and a Grade 6 in English Literature.
