Course Information

Overview

The BTEC Recreation Assistant, Level 2 is a practical one-year course designed for students who are interested in sport, fitness and active leisure. You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to work in leisure centres and sports facilities, gaining an understanding of customer service, facility operations and the responsibilities of a recreation assistant.

The course prepares you for roles within the sport and active leisure industry and can also support progression to further study.

What you'll learn

You will learn how recreation and leisure facilities operate and how to support customers in a professional environment. Areas of study include:

• The sport and active leisure industry
• Customer service skills
• The roles and responsibilities of a recreation assistant
• Maintaining leisure facilities
• Supporting the delivery of activities and events
• Health, safety and professional working practices
• Poolside supervision and safe working practices
• Supporting swimming activities and aquatic programmes

You will also develop teamwork, communication and organisational skills that are valued by employers.

Units you will study

The course consists of four mandatory units:

• Working in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
• Roles and Responsibilities of a Recreation Assistant
• Recreation Assistant Customer Service Skills
• Working as a Recreation Assistant

These units are designed to help you build the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to work as a recreation assistant.

Entry requirements

You will need GCSE grades 3 or above.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is completed through internally assessed assignments and practical activities. You will produce evidence of your skills and knowledge through vocational tasks, projects and workplace-related activities.

Units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction, and all units contribute towards your overall qualification grade.

After completing this course, you could progress to:

• Employment within a leisure centre or sports facility
• A Level 2 Gym Instructor course
• Level 3 study in sport-related subjects, such as sports coaching
• Apprenticeships within the sport and active leisure sector
• Pool attendant and wet-side leisure centre roles
• Further training in lifeguarding and swimming-related qualifications

The qualification is designed to support progression into employment and further training.
