COURSE OVERVIEW

Our Applied Science is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

The course is equivalent to three GCSEs Grades 8-4 and is normally taken as a full-time course.

Students who successfully complete the course may progress on to the Level 3 Applied Science, or if you achieve top grades you may study a Level 3 Applied Science with some A-Levels.

The course is made up of the following 12 units:

  • Chemistry and Our Earth
  • Energy and Our Universe
  • Biology and Our Environment
  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Health Applications of Life Science
  • Scientific Skills
  • World Energy
  • The Living Body
  • Monitoring the Environment

Practicals

Many of the units that you will study are based on practical experiments. You will get the opportunity to carry out experiments in all 3 sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Exams

You are required to sit 2 exams, and the remainder of the course is assessed by the completion of assignments that are set and marked by your teachers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 and above, including Maths, English and Science.
