The Royal Borough of Greenwich Sensory Service

This is a borough wide service providing advice and support to deaf, hearing impaired and visually impaired children aged 0–25 years and their families. We offer on-site support to deaf and hearing-impaired students attending Shooters Hill. Support offered includes communication support in lessons as well as input from the Teacher of the Deaf and a Speech and Language Therapist.

The aim of the Service is to provide the best possible support, according to the individual needs of students, enabling them to achieve their full potential on their chosen course. We also aim to develop the students’ independence skills, preparing them for the future & enabling them to fully participate in the wider community.

The team of on-site staff includes:

  • Teachers of the Deaf (ToD) and Educational Audiologist
  • Communication Support Workers (CSW)
  • Learning Support Assistants (LSA)
  • Deaf Instructor
  • Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT)

All staff are qualified in their field or are currently involved in the relevant training. All contracted staff have achieved at least Level 3 in British Sign Language with many continuing to Level 6 and interpreter training.

Types of support:

  • Support and guidance with application and enrolment
  • In class communication support using BSL, SSE or note taking depending on individual preference and need
  • Clarification and modification of language
  • One to one tutorials to support work covered in class, assignments and preparation for examinations
  • BSL teaching and regular meetings to discuss deaf issues
  • Audiological support and provision of a radio aid as required
  • Close liaison with subject teachers and tutors, with the provision of deaf awareness for staff as well as other students
  • Communication support for the other aspects of post 16 life, including interviews, visits, special events and tutor time
  • Links with other deaf students
  • Appropriate access arrangements for all examinations
  • Support and guidance with university applications

Organisation of specific events to support the personal development of deaf students e.g. developing skills for further independence, preparing for the future including CV writing and work, continuing education e.g. university, leisure opportunities etc,

Vision impaired students can, according to need, have monitoring support and advice, or more regular support from teachers of the VI and support staff.

  • Adapted teaching materials
  • Touch typing
  • Low vision aids
  • An independence skills programme from the rehabilitation and mobility officer
